Until
recently Puerto Pollensa in Mallorca remained largely undiscovered
and untouched by mainstream tourism and development. Situated on
the northern-most peninsula of the island, for many years it remained
difficult to reach along the old winding roads heading north from
Palma. As a consequence of this Puerto Pollensa, the old town of
Pollensa, situated 3 miles inland from the coast, and the surrounding
countryside have managed to retain much of their original charm
and character. However in June 2006 the long awaited completion
of the motorway took place that now brings this most beautiful part
of the island within easy reach of the capital and its International
airport. Balance your busy lives with long weekends, short breaks
or your annual holiday in a stunning second home within easy reach
of the UK.

The
surrounding area offers some of the most spectacular landscape views
to be found anywhere in the Mediterranean, with the majestic Tramuntana
mountains rolling down to meet the glassy waters of the bay of Pollensa.
This stunning scenery offers other hidden benefits – in the
hot summer months the daily circular movement of air rising off
the warm land and falling down the mountains over the cooler sea
generates a pleasant breeze, perfect for cooling you down and perfect
for sailing, windsurfing or just chilling.
Originally a small fishing port, Puerto Pollensa has fast
become one of the most popular family holiday destinations
in Europe. The bustling marina & port offer a wealth of
first class restaurants and bars catering for all tastes and
ages. Its safe beaches and large pedestrian areas have much
to offer, with exceptional facilities for all age groups and
interests. The local council is constantly working to improve
the beaches and infrastructure; all beaches have sun beds
and umbrellas for rent, are cleaned daily, there are public
showers and changing rooms, Red Cross lifeguard patrols, daily
street cleaning, beach police patrolling on bicycles, passenger
ferry trips to Formentor beach and much more.
In
contrast, the old town of Pollensa is a maze of narrow streets and
ancient buildings surrounding a beautiful old ‘plaza’
and church. Balmy evenings can be spent in pavement bars and cafes,
perusing the many art galleries or enjoying any one of the many
excellent restaurants. The Sunday fruit and vegetable market provides
the perfect excuse to while away a Sunday morning watching the world
go by. Pollensa has also become a cultural centre for the island,
with a world famous music festival held throughout July and August,
the annual re-enactment of the Moorish invasion of Pollensa and
many craft and artesan fairs held throughout the year.
For
those who prefer a more active holiday, apart from the obvious maritime
pursuits of sailing, windsurfing, kite surfing, waterskiing, kayaking
and scuba diving, North Mallorca has miles and miles of safe cycling,
guided hiking, walking to suit all levels, and mountaineering. The
Council of Mallorca is currently working on Project 365, designed
to promote Mallorca as an all year round destination for activity
holidays.
